After many hours of travelling and a few close calls, Amanda and I made it to Sydney. Finally! We got in at 9am SYD time 2 days ago and have been busy exploring the city ever since. On the first day we met 6 retired bankers at a bistro down the street. They were a hoot! They apparently meet once a week to work on some newsletter and then grab coffee together. One of them told me that when I go to New Zealand to set my watch back 5 years. ha! Another one asked me about Graceland, because his daughter and her family are going there in a few months. I guess his son-in-law is a huge Elvis fan, and his 2 y.o. grandson even knows some of his songs. This reminded me of Jeff , Zac, and the Beatles. :)
Yesterday we went on a morning coffee/tea cruise around the harbor and then wandered around the opera house and botanical gardens. We went to the world famous Bondi Beach and had dinner at a restaurant there. It was amazing to sit outside on the boardwalk and just watch the waves as we enjoyed dinner and conversation. We met a Kiwi (New Zealander) named Rob and a guy from Seattle named Ali. Rob gave us all sorts of good tips for travelling to New Zealand, and Ali is actually originally from Macomb, IL (!). He is very familiar with Ft. Madison and the surrounding area. It was hilarious to meet someone from the Midwest and swap stories with the Kiwi. We all had a great time.
Today we've been out exploring some more. We found a couple of art shops; one is a painter and the other is a photographer. Everyone here is really friendly. Can't wait to see what else is in store for us!
We're leaving tomorrow for Melbourne and then drive from there down around the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide with a few stops in little beachy towns along the way. If you hear of some tourists driving on the "wrong" side of the road, it's probably us...
