Today we decided to be more like locals and rent bikes from the hostel. hahaha - what an experience! It makes me want to get my bike out of my storage locker at home and bike around town more. I met a lot of new people last night during dinner, so I made plans with one of them to bike around town today. Her name's Sarah, and she's from Sydney, Australia. She's been studying abroad in Scotland and is doing a little traveling before heading home to the land down under. We left the hostel this morning around 10 and got back around 7. I wish I had kept track of where all we went, because it was quite the work out.
The streets here are mostly made of cobblestone, so it's very uneven. Just thinking about getting back on a bike right now makes me grimace. :) Major shout out to whoever invented asphalt...
Sarah and I also met up with a lady from Women Welcome Women today. Her name's Christa, and she lives in a suburb of Bruges. It was really neat chatting with a local. She gave us some great insider tips. We also got coffee/tea and Belgium pancakes, and she taught us the "correct" way to eat pancakes. They're very thin and about the size of dinner plates. They come folded in half with powdered sugar on top. You unfold them, lay out brown sugar on the inside, fold them in half again, and then roll them up to eat with a knife and fork. They're AMAZING!
Tonight will be an early night. I brave the trains again tomorrow to my next accomodation in Antwerp for 3 nights. I'm traveling with new friends tomorrow, though, and we're all planning to stop in Ghent for the day. We'll be a group of 2 guys from Virginia, 1 guy from Australia, 1 girl from Australia, a couple from Boulder, and me. :) I'm looking forward to whatever the day brings!
Love you!
