Snigdha and Hari are married!

It's 12pm here, and I've just enjoyed the most relaxing night and morning in the past 4 days. Indian weddings are intense! This one in particular is absolutely crazy. Snigdha's family is from Patna in the North, and Hari's family is from Chennai in the South. Both of those areas have different traditions related to weddings, so they had to compromise on a few things and repeat a few other things for the benefit of each family. They've now been married twice over here. They were married in the northern Indian tradition at around 2am on the 24th (with it starting around 6pm on the 23rd) and then re-married in the southern Indian tradition around 8am on the 24th again. Needless to say, nobody has gotten much sleep. I can't imagine being the bride! Both of the ceremonies were amazing, even though we couldn't understand much that was spoken. Just watching the body language of the bride, groom, and all the attendees was entertaining enough. When we had to participate, everyone was great at letting us know what we needed to do. We threw a lot of tumeric at them over those 2 days. :)

Our morning flight yesterday was cancelled, so we had to do some last minute flight switching, which unfortunately, left us with a 9 hour layover in Calcutta. Thankfully, one of Hari's brothers lives in Calcutta, so he and his family were gracious enough to let us hang out at their house for several hours. I'm now friends with Hari's little 2 year old niece. :)

Today we're off to explore Chennai with the bride and groom, and then tomorrow is a wedding reception down here for everyone who couldn't make the wedding. Some of Snigdha's family is coming down from Patna, as well. Everyone's been absolutely wonderful here. They all seem impressed with how we're doing so far. We got the most praise when we put on our saris all by ourselves. Everyone also tells us that we "wear them very well." :) Can't wait to show everyone pictures when I get back.

Love, love, love
Rachel
